The table saw is one of the most versatile and powerful tools in the wood shop, but it requires proper training and respect. This guide covers the essential safety procedures, proper techniques, and certification requirements for using the table saw at Kalamazoo Makerspace.

Before You Begin

All members must complete table saw safety training before using the equipment. Training includes:

  • Review of the safety manual and exam
  • Hands-on demonstration with a qualified trainer
  • Understanding of all safety features and guards
  • Proper use of push sticks and other safety devices
  • Emergency procedures and first aid locations
  • Passing the safety exam with 100% accuracy

After certification, you can use the table saw independently during staffed hours.

Essential Safety Rules

Personal Safety

  • Always wear safety glasses – Required at all times in the wood shop.
  • Use hearing protection – Table saws are loud and can damage hearing.
  • No loose clothing or jewelry – Tie back long hair and remove dangling items.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes – Protect your feet from falling materials.
  • Stay alert and focused – Never use the table saw when tired or distracted.
  • No drugs or alcohol – Zero tolerance policy for impaired operation.

Operational Safety

  • Use the blade guard – Keep guards in place whenever possible.
  • Stand to the side – Never stand directly behind the blade.
  • Use push sticks – Keep hands at least 6 inches from the blade.
  • Support long pieces – Use outfeed tables or roller stands.
  • One cut at a time – Never cut multiple pieces simultaneously.
  • Wait for full stop – Let the blade stop completely before reaching near it.

Before Each Use

  1. Inspect the blade – Check for damage, proper installation, and sharpness.
  2. Check safety features – Ensure guards, splitter, and anti-kickback pawls are functioning.
  3. Clear the area – Remove debris and ensure adequate workspace.
  4. Adjust blade height – Set blade to extend 1/4 inch above the workpiece.
  5. Set the fence – Ensure fence is parallel to the blade and locked securely.
  6. Test run – Turn on the saw briefly to ensure smooth operation before cutting.

  2. Take the written exam – Complete the exam at the end of the manual. You must score 100%.
  3. Schedule hands-on training – Contact a wood shop trainer to arrange practical training.
  4. Demonstrate competency – Show proper setup, operation, and safety procedures.
  5. Receive certification – Once approved, you'll be authorized to use the table saw independently.

What if I fail the exam?

You can retake the exam after reviewing the material again. We want everyone to succeed and use the equipment safely.

Does certification expire?

Certifications are reviewed annually. You may need to complete a refresher course if there are significant changes to equipment or procedures.

Can I use the table saw if I'm already certified elsewhere?

You still need to complete our specific training to understand our equipment and procedures. However, your experience will make the process quick and straightforward.
